Chapter 8
The next few days were chaotic.
Every morning, I heard mom scream whenever she stepped into the garage and saw Toothless. Why she kept going in there was just so beyond me that after day 5, I gave up asking myself why.
Dad was actually okay with having Toothless in the garage. He told me that he used to have a snake as a kid so he was fine with me having my own reptile.
Even if it was a huge, fire breathing, flying lizard.
The first day I had left for work, dad told me that Toothless started to whine for me after a few hours.
And when I got home and into his ‘nest’ as I was calling it, the dragon practically pounced and tackled me to the ground, licking me all over.
I just couldn’t help but laugh when he greeted me like this.
And true to my word, he actually stayed in the garage. Only being let out at night to stretch out his wings and do his ‘business’ a little ways out in the forest.
And when I wasn’t at work repairing cars, I was in the garage designing the saddle and pulley system to the tail fin.
The saddle was easy to draw out. I just copied it from the few images I had found of the one from the movie.
The system however was proving to be tricky.
Watching the only clip I could find on YouTube of Hiccup figuring out how to put his own creating to work, I was having difficulty in seeing how he was getting it to work.
Soon giving up on the clips, I pulled out a few old journals from my grandfather and looked through them instead.
Grandfather’s journals had sketches of his own inventions and even pictures of the finished product.
I smiled fondly as I looked through the journals.
His drawings were very detailed and clean, lines pointing out each component of the creation.  There were notes on everything he did. The errors and corrections he discovered and what the invention was suppose to do.
After a while, I soon sighed sadly as I set aside the first journal and reached for the next one.
“Gods I miss him.” I muttered as I blew off the dust and opened the hard back book.
Toothless then warbled, coming up and nudging my arm.
Smiling, I reached up and patted him on the head.
“It’s nothing bud.” I said to him. “Just the only family that actually cared about me. He’s gone now and I just miss him very much.”
Cooing softly, Toothless nudged himself closer and soon had his head on my lap.
Chuckling a bit, I set the journal aside and stroked his scaly head. “I swear I’m fine bud. My grandfather passed away a very long time ago when I was little. I learned enough from him to improve my skills in blacksmithing on my own but I do miss his input on how to be better.”
The Nightfury on my lap just whimpered a bit, looking unconvinced that I was okay.
I sighed and just shook my head. “What am I going to do with you Toothless?” I said as I chuckled.
The dragon just smirked back and I soon heard his tail wagging a bit, the fake fin scrapping against the floor.
We then both jumped as my phone started going off on my desk.
Sitting up, I grabbed it and found it was Frankie calling.
“Wonder what he wants.” I muttered as I then answered. “Frankie? What’s u….”
“THERE’S A GRONCKLE IN THE BARN!” Came the panic filled voice of my friend.
“Wait what?” I sat up a bit more in alarm with Toothless looking at me curiously. “There’s a what in where?”
“There’s a Boulder Class, bumpy hide, tiny winged dragon in my barn!” Frankie repeated. “I was on my way out to do morning chores and there it was in the back of the barn and growling at me!”
“Are the horses okay?” I asked, knowing that a few of his family horses were kept in the barn as well.
“Well they aren’t freaking out but I’m terrified to what’ll happen when the dragon reacts to them.” Frankie said fearfully still. “You tamed a Nightfury. Can you come over and tame this one?”
“I only tamed one dragon. I was just lucky that it was Toothless.” I pointed out. “What makes you think I can tame a Gronckle? Or any other dragon for that matter?”
“Please help Ann!” He pleaded. “What if this dragon eats everything in the barn?! Or hurts the horses? Or worse yet, burns down the barn? That thing has been up since I was born!”
I sighed and groaned before I caved in.
I knew how much Frankie loved working on the farm and how much he loved that barn.
We were always playing it growing up. There were so many memories in that barn.
“Okay, I’ll be right over Frankie.” I said as I got up and went into the house. “But just know that I have no idea what I have to do to tame it.”
“I know but any help at all would be great.” Frankie said as I went over to the stairs that went up into my room. “I don’t want to risk the barn.”
“I know Frankie, I know.” I said to calm him down. “Just let me get dressed and I’ll be right over. Get some fish ready too in case this Gronckle is hungry.”
“Okay I will. But get over here fast. Mom saw the dragon too after she heard me scream and ran back into the house to call the police.”
Crap. I thought as I hurried to grab a few things. “Just keep them back until I get there! Understand?”
“Okay Ann. I’ll try. Just hurry!” He then hung up and I tossed my phone onto the bed.
I then quickly got dressed in blue jeans, a long sleeved green shirt and the fur vest again.
Quickly braiding my hair, I grabbed my leather riding jacket, phone and my favorite boots and headed back downstairs.
I then ran back to the garage where I hit the button to open the door and pulled my boots on.
“Toothless stay here and be good.” I said as I went over to my covered motorcycle. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
Toothless nodded and watched as I pulled off the cover and revealed the black two wheeled vehicle under it.
Tossing the cover aside, I then grabbed my helmet, strapped it on and then walked the bike out of the garage.
I then hit the button on the bike to close the garage and Toothless started whimpering as it started to lower.
“Stay there bud.” I told him as it still lowered. “You’ll be fine. I’m only going to be gone for a little while. Just stay and be safe.”
Toothless dropped his longer ear flaps but nodded, pulling his tail in to keep it from being trapped under the garage door.
Soon the door closed blocked him from seeing me.
“I’ll be fine bud.” I yelled loudly enough before I started up my motorcycle. “I promise I’ll be okay! And that I won’t do anything……well stupid.”
I then revved the engine and sped off, headed for Frankie’s farm.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Apparently I didn’t get here fast enough.
The moment I arrived, there were already several squad cars and even as few SWAT men as well.
They were all positioned around the barn and aiming their weapons at the wooden structure.
One of the men then turned at hearing me pulling up the drive and quickly approached me.
“Miss you need to turn around and leave the area.” He said after I shut down the engine. “There’s a dangerous dragon on the premises.”
“I know.” I said as I took off my helmet. “Frankie called me before his mom called you guys. I can help.”
“Let us handle this miss.” He said as he held his hand up. “This is a job for professionals. Not some biker chick.”
“Biker chick?!” I blurted back as I glared at him. “Listen here bud. I’m no biker chick. I’m not in any sort of gang either for that matter. I came here to help my friend.”
“I can’t let you onto the scene!”
“Annie!”
I turned and saw Frankie running up to me, still looking like he was in a panic.
“Annie thank god you’re here!” He said as he came up and hugged me while I was still on the bike. “The Gronckle is starting to snarl and scaring the horses!”
“Hey Frank.” I smiled as I hugged him back. “I still don’t see how I can help with this.”
“You have to try Annie!” Frankie said as he released me. “If these guys fire their guns, they’ll scare the horses and make the dragon freak out even worse. The Gronckle might even hurt the horses!”
I groaning, I started taking off my jacket and getting off the bike. “Fine. You got any fish?”
Frankie nodded frantically. “Yes! And it’s actually part of a fresh shipment dad got for you.”
“Go get a few fish and meet me at the barn doors.” I said as I tossed my jacket over my bike. “I’ll…..well I’ll think of something.”
Nodding, Frankie then ran off to his house to get the fish.
“Miss I can’t let you in there.” The officer then spoke up. “This is a police involved situation and I can’t let you….”
“You can either let me in there, calm down the dragon, and save the horses….” I interrupted as I glared at the man. “Or you can just fire upon a creature with scales harder than steel and risk the lives of the horses by enraging the Gronckle even further.”
The officer just gave me a long, hard look before dropping his shoulders and sighing.
“Fine. You have 10 minutes. If you don’t calm down that beast, we’re moving in.” He said before he turned and radioed his men to stand down.
Sighing a bit, I looked over at the still closed barn doors.
“I sure hope I know what I’m doing.” I muttered before adjusted my vest and made my way over to the crowd of officers and SWAT.
Frankie calls me about a Gronckle in his barn. How the hell am i going to save it with the barn being surrounded by men with guns?
